The Ababda are primarily nomadic people living in southern Egypt. They hold many similarities with their Sudanese neighbors, and appear to live a very peaceful existance. This example of their dance with swords, was likely filmed on Egyptian tv.

The Acholi dance is most known for it's fast rhythm and incorporation of ankle shakers. The dance and people are of Uganda, and they continue their culture in the face of great tumult.

The Afar people are a largely nomadic group that continue living in a traditional manner throughout the eastern Horn of Africa. Their lifestyle is relatively spare, and they primarily herd animals for subsistence living. Their music and wardrobe show an exuberance that is a striking contrast to the tough conditions of their surroundings.

The Rumba traditional Grupo Afrocuba de Matanzas is one of the very great traditional institutions of Afrocuban music from Cuba. Hailing from Matanzas, the cultural center of African culture on the Island, the group has been performing for years and have made some of the best recordings of rumba ever conscribed to tape.

The Agbazda dance of the Ewe people is an ancient dance that is evolved from a war dance. The Ewe people are in Ghana, Benin and Togo, and this footage was shot in Togo.

The refiner and developer of an American physical language, Alvin Ailey was one of the most important choreographers modern America. Having taken principles of Katherine Dunham's technique and applied them to his own compositions, Mr. Ailey laid more stones in the path that connected the African dance aesthetic to that of the contemporary canon of movement. His theater and schools continue his work.
